We are seeking a trustee with experience in the charity/ voluntary sector to strengthen our understanding of charity governance, sector practice and development

As we work towards becoming a Lived Experience Recovery Organisation (LERO), we are committed to ensuring recovery voices are represented at every level of our leadership.

About The Living Room

The Living Room is a Hertfordshire charity providing abstinence-based group therapy and counselling for adults affected by addiction, alongside support for families and carers. Our work helps people build lasting recovery, rebuild relationships and regain purpose in their lives.

As we continue to grow our services and reach more people across the county, we are strengthening our board of trustees.

Trustees work collectively to ensure the charity remains well-governed, sustainable and focused on delivering meaningful recovery outcomes.

We are particularly interested in people who bring experience in one or more of the following

  • Leadership within the charity or voluntary sector
  • Charity governance and trustee responsibilities
  • Strategic planning or organisational development
  • Health, social care or recovery services
  • Impact measurement or service evaluation

You do not need previous trustee experience. Support and induction will be provided.

Trustees share collective responsibility for the governance of the charity. This includes:

  • Ensuring the charity pursues its mission and charitable objectives
  • Providing strategic oversight and guidance
  • Ensuring the organisation is financially sustainable and well governed
  • Supporting and constructively challenging the executive team

Acting as an ambassador for the charity where appropriate

Time Commitment

The board of trustees meets approximately 4–6 times per year, with meetings usually lasting around 2 hours.

Trustees are also asked to spend some time preparing for meetings and occasionally contributing to discussions between meetings.

Overall the role typically requires around 4–6 hours per month.

Lived Experience and Recovery Leadership

The Living Room is committed to becoming a Lived Experience Recovery Organisation (LERO), ensuring that people with lived experience of addiction and recovery help shape our services, culture and leadership.

We warmly encourage applications from people with lived experience of recovery, or those who have supported a family member or loved one through addiction and recovery. Your insight and perspective help ensure our services remain authentic, compassionate and effective.

Having lived experience of addiction or recovery will never exclude you from leadership here — we believe it strengthens our organisation.
