Bring your passion and skill to the LIFE Project. Help adults with learning disabilities experience Learning, Involvement, Friendship and Employment.

Harpenden Mencap's brand new LIFE project launches in September 2026. It is a community-based day opportunities service in Harpenden for adults with learning disabilities.

LIFE stands for Learning, Involvement, Friendship and Employment.

What is a Skilled LIFE Mentor?

We are looking for enthusiastic and skills volunteers who would like to share their knowledge, experience and passions with adults with learning disabilities.

You might be a professional, someone who has retired from a particular career, or someone with a skill or hobby you love. Whatever your background, your experience could help an adult with learning disabilities learn something new, build confidence and discover their own potential.

We are particularly interested in people with skills and experience in areas such as:

  • Horticulture and gardening
  • Cooking, food and nutrition
  • Carpentry, DIY and practical skills
  • Fitness, sport and wellbeing
  • Life coaching, confidence and communication
  • Work, business and employability skills
  • Travel and independence skills
  • Or something completely different!

If you have a skill, we'd love to hear about it!

What does volunteering involve?

The LIFE Project will run two sessions each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sessions will typically last 2-3 hours. We may ask you to commit to one session per week.

You could:

  • Lead or support an activity based on your skills
  • Share practical knowledge and demonstrate techniques
  • Help participants develop new skills or work towards a project
  • Help create a friendly, inclusive and enjoyable environment

You don't need to be a trained teacher or have previous experience working with adults with learning disabilities. We will work with you to make sure your skills and experience can be used in a way that works for you and the people attending LIFE.

Interested?

We'd love to hear from you! Please complete our expression of interest form and we'll be in touch shortly.

LIFE is about making every day count.
