Help adults with learning disabilities experience all that LIFE has to offer.
LIFE stands for Learning, Involvement, Friendship and Employment. This is Harpenden Mencap's new day opportunity service for adults with learning disabilities.
About LIFE
This service commences in October 2026, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at various locations around Harpenden (AL5). There will be two sessions per day - one in the morning, one in the afternoon - lasting two-three hours. We are recruiting LIFE Enhancer volunteers to help out at one session per week.
What does the role involve?
LIFE Enhancers are there to help everyone feel welcome, included and able to enjoy the session in their own way. Sometimes that might mean being a friendly face and having a chat, encouraging someone to have a go at an activity, or giving a helping hand if they’re unsure what to do.
Our participants choose which activities they would like to try. This term, we’ll be out and about in the community, taking part in activities such as:
- Trying out local Hertfordshire Health Walks
- Creating a litter picking group
- Visiting local coffee mornings
- Starting a project with Harpenden Mencap's Allotment Club
- Being musical at Harpenden's Intergenerational Choir
What you do could be as simple as walking alongside someone who prefers a slower pace, helping someone decide what litter is safe and appropriate to pick up, or just keeping someone company.
You don’t need to be an expert or know all the answers. It’s about being there, getting involved and helping things feel comfortable, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
