Befriender

Harpenden Mencap supports adults with learning disabilities across three sites in the local area. We are recruiting friendly, interested volunteers to help the people we support to get out and about to enjoy their hobbies, attend social events, and more.

When we first meet you, we'll ask about your hobbies and activities, and try to match you with a member of our community who is interested in similar things.

Example Befriending opportunities:

1) Nick* is in his early 70s. He would like to have a friend to accompany him on a local walk, or to the pub for a pint.

2) Paola* is in her 40s. She wants to go to a social club in St Albans via public transport, but needs a companion to help her feel more confident using the bus.

3) Ethan* is in his 30s. He enjoys running and wants to enter a 10K. He will need the support of a fellow runner to navigate the race route and signs.

Desirable qualities

• Friendly, caring, approachable manner
• Trustworthy and reliable
• Comfortable in chatting with a variety of people and in new social situations

Additional information

Training and support available. Reminder that although Harpenden Mencap operates in AL5 (Hertfordshire), as part of this role you may be asked to travel to other local areas.
