Summary
The role would be to support the youth leader in delivering fun activities for 12-17 year olds with disabilities on early Friday evenings at Hitchin Youth TrustDetailed description
This is a new group starting after school on September 2nd to provide fun, informal youth activities for young people with Down's Syndrome and other disabilities. It provides a great opportunity for a volunteer to engage with the local community and make a huge difference to the experience of young people who have very limited involvement in out of school activities normally.
Activities are likely to include ball games, crafts, cooking and other activities identified by the young people themselves. Most will be based at Hitchin Youth Trust although there is a possibility of meeting in other locations eg. at a cinema. The youth trust offers a kitchen, an outdoor space and interior craft and social space to make use of. The programme of activities will be developed fully once the first couple of sessions have established skills and interests of the group and it's leaders.
The group will be friendly and fun, providing out of school opportunities for the young people to form friendships, pursue their own interests, relax and create and experience a positive atmosphere where they feel able to discuss anything that may be concerning them.
Parents/carers will not always be required to attend but for logistical and care reasons we expect some will stay. There should always also be sufficient support for them to drop-off if they want to. We value our relationships with families and while this group's focus is on the young people, we are happy to involve parents who wish to help.
The supporter will need to be flexible and responsive to the individuals attending, helping those who need a bit of support with activities and referring to the Youth Club leader for instruction as required. Any skills such as arts, crafts, cooking, fitness, dance, gardening, music would be very useful and could form part of the programme.
We are open to having more than one Support Volunteer on a rota basis if applicants are not available every Friday.
This role is eligible for travel expenses and reimbursement of any out of pocket expenses. A DBS check will also be required
