The Pioneer Club is a St Albans charity running a skatepark, music venue and youth programme, early in a two-year turnaround to build a stronger, more sustainable organisation. We're recruiting a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees at a pivotal moment: we're actively separating out what has until now been one overloaded role into distinct Treasurer, Bookkeeper and Finance Volunteer functions, and we need someone who wants a hand in shaping that, not just inheriting a finished structure.
What you'll be doing in the first few months
- Working with our external accountant and bookkeeping support to clarify roles, responsibilities and handover points between Treasurer, Bookkeeper and Accountant — so the split actually sticks rather than drifting back into one person doing everything
- Helping recruit and onboard a hands-on Finance Volunteer (we're hoping to find part-qualified accounting support, potentially pro bono time from a larger firm) to work alongside Sue, our Office Manager, who has been covering some basic finance tasks (payroll, logging receipts) on top of her role, while a dedicated Bookkeeper function is properly established
- Standing up a monthly Finance Committee from scratch — setting its agenda, reporting rhythm and terms of reference — and then chairing it
- Getting visibility of, and providing oversight on, the year-end accounts process as it's finalised with our accountant
What the role becomes once that's bedded in
- Strategic oversight of budgets, forecasts and management accounts — checking they're accurate and reliable enough to base Board decisions on
- Assessing financial decisions against organisational strategy — can we afford this, does it align with where we're going
- Chairing the now-established monthly Finance Committee, where Sue and/or the Bookkeeper report on the month's activity and any issues with the accountant
- Helping build and execute the organisation's financial strategy — shaping the direction of travel with the Board, not just reviewing figures once decisions have been made.
What it isn't
Not a bookkeeping or transactional accounting role. You won't be processing entries or doing VAT returns yourself — but you will need to understand those processes well enough to help design how they should work and who owns what.
Time commitment
Expect more input in the first few months while roles and processes are being defined, settling to a few hours a month plus chairing the monthly Finance Committee and attending Board meetings.
Who we're looking for
Someone financially literate — qualified or part-qualified accountant, or equivalent senior financial management experience — comfortable with ambiguity and genuinely interested in building good process, not just reviewing figures once they're already reliable.

- Standard Charity Commission trustee eligibility checks apply
- DBS check required given our work with young people.
