We are looking for a volunteer handyman, to help identify and carry out minor maintenance and repair tasks around our building and grounds.
About The Pioneer Club
The Pioneer Club has been a creative youth and community venue at the heart of St Albans since 1941. We provide opportunities for young people through skateboarding, music, performing arts, events, and community activities. As a charity and community venue, we rely on volunteers to help us maintain a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment for the thousands of young people and visitors who use our facilities each year.
Why We Need Your Support
Our building is a busy and well-loved space, which means there is always a list of small repairs, maintenance tasks, and improvements that need attention. By sharing your practical skills and experience, you'll help us keep our facilities safe, functional, and welcoming for young people, volunteers, staff, and visitors.
Every repair completed helps us direct more of our charitable resources towards supporting young people and delivering life-changing activities.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Volunteer Handyman, you'll help identify and carry out minor maintenance and repair tasks around our building and grounds. Tasks may include:
- Carrying out basic repairs to fixtures, fittings, and furniture.
- Adjusting doors, locks, handles, shelving, and equipment.
- Replacing light bulbs and minor fittings.
- Fixing small decorating issues and cosmetic damage.
- Helping identify maintenance issues before they become larger problems.
- Supporting basic health and safety improvements.
- Advising staff on repair priorities and practical solutions
- Liaising with staff where specialist contractors may be required
You will not be expected to undertake any work requiring specialist certifications, such as gas, electrical, or structural work.
Skills and Experience
We're looking for someone who:
- Has practical DIY, maintenance, trade, or handyman experience.
- Enjoys problem-solving and fixing things.
- Can work safely and independently.
- Has good attention to detail.
- Is reliable and able to communicate effectively with staff.
- Supports the aims and values of The Pioneer Club.
Professional trade qualifications are welcome but not essential.
Time Commitment
We're flexible and can work around your availability.
Ideally, we'd like someone who can offer:
- 2 to 8 hours per month
- Regular visits, or
- Occasional support for specific projects and repairs
