Samaritans of North Herts & Stevenage is looking for a Treasurer Trustee to take over from our existing Treasurer by early 2027. There will be full handover.

Samaritans of North Herts & Stevenage is a small and friendly charity run almost entirely by volunteers. This is a great opportunity to join our team and really make a difference locally and nationally.

As this is a Trustee position, applicants must be able to confirm that they comply with the HMRC 'fit and proper persons' requirements.

It is expected that during late 2026 full handover will be available for the key responsibilities of the Treasurer at our branch that are:

  • Attendance at Trustee meetings 4-6 times annually, including the AGM.
  • Maintain proper accounts using our software (currently Xero) and undertake a bank reconciliation monthly.
  • Ensure that the book-keeping system and audited accounts comply with the requirements of the Charities Acts and any additional practices requested by the Central Office and Trustee Board or directed by legislation.
  • Review the cash flow monthly schedule payments and arrange for the transfer of funds as appropriate.
  • Arrange for the payment of bills monthly. This must include acting as one of the signatories to the branch’s bank account and be the main contact for branch banking matters.
  • Ad hoc input/advice to Trustees/other working parties on financial matters
  • Preparation of finance pack for Trustee meetings to normally include:
    • Management accounts in excel which mirror the format of the statutory accounts
    • Updating the actuals vs budget workbook
    • A finance highlights document
  • Prepare documents and schedules for the independent examiner or auditor and liaise with them. Submit Annual Returns to the Charity Commission.
  • Maintain strong financial management including regular review of the Branch Financial policy, confirming that the annual insurance cover is adequate and ensuring that Trustees review the Internal Financial Control Checklist each year.
  • Preparing the NBC calculation for Trustee agreement each year
  • Ensure the organisation is registered with HMRC for Gift Aid, and that records are kept claiming that additional funding.
  • Check annually that reserves are invested in a risk-free account and receiving a good rate of interest.
  •  Ensure the organisation’s financial controls and good practice are observed

Some admin support is available to assist the Treasurer and further details can be provided on application.
