Join our volunteer team as a Handyman/Maintenance Volunteer! Use your practical skills to help with repairs, upkeep and keeping our spaces safe and welcoming.
We are looking for a practical, reliable and friendly volunteer to help us keep our premises safe, welcoming and well maintained.
This is a varied, hands-on role that would suit someone who enjoys fixing things, carrying out general maintenance and using their practical skills to make a positive difference. Your support will help ensure that our staff, volunteers, visitors and the people we support can enjoy a comfortable and well-maintained environment.
You do not need to be a professional tradesperson. We are looking for someone with good general DIY and maintenance skills who knows their own limits and is happy to flag jobs that require a qualified professional.
What You’ll Be Doing
Depending on your skills, experience and the needs of the organisation, you may help with:
- Carrying out minor repairs and general maintenance around our premises.
- Completing basic DIY tasks, such as putting up shelves, pictures or noticeboards.
- Carrying out minor decorating, painting and touch-up work.
- Checking doors, handles, locks, hinges and other fixtures and reporting or addressing minor issues.
- Helping to keep outdoor areas, storage spaces and communal areas tidy and well maintained.
- Identifying maintenance issues and reporting anything that requires specialist attention.
- Supporting occasional improvement projects around the premises.
- Helping us maintain a safe, pleasant and welcoming environment.
- Following the organisation’s health and safety procedures at all times.
Tasks will always be agreed based on your skills and experience. Work requiring specialist qualifications or certification, such as certain electrical, gas or plumbing work, will be referred to an appropriately qualified professional.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you:
- Have practical DIY, handyman or general maintenance skills.
- Enjoy practical, hands-on work and problem solving.
- Are reliable, responsible and able to work safely.
- Have good attention to detail and take pride in your work.
- Are comfortable working independently while also being part of a wider team.
- Are friendly, approachable and respectful of others.
- Understand when a task is beyond your experience and should be referred to a professional.
- Are willing to follow our policies, procedures and health and safety requirements.
- Share our commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.
Previous experience in maintenance, construction, property management or a skilled trade would be helpful, but it is not essential.
What You’ll Gain
By volunteering with us, you will have the opportunity to:
- Use your practical skills to make a meaningful contribution to a volunteer organisation.
- See the direct difference your work makes to our premises and the people who use them.
- Meet new people and become part of a friendly and supportive team.
- Develop or maintain practical skills and experience.
- Gain valuable volunteering experience and, where appropriate, a reference.
- Enjoy a flexible role with a variety of practical tasks.
Time Commitment
We are happy to discuss a volunteering arrangement that works for both you and the organisation. This could involve regular weekly or monthly hours, or support with maintenance tasks as they arise.
Practical Requirements
Some tasks may involve standing, bending, lifting or using basic hand tools. We will discuss individual tasks with you and make reasonable adjustments where possible.
