Are you a good listener with a warm, friendly nature? Would you like to make a meaningful difference by giving people time, kindness and emotional support?

We’re looking for compassionate volunteers to join us as Listener Volunteers, offering one‑to‑one or group-based support to people affected by life‑limiting illness, from diagnosis through bereavement.

⭐ What you’ll be doing

As a Listener Volunteer, you will help clients feel heard, understood and supported. Tasks may include:

  • Providing one-to-one emotional support
  • in clients’ homes
  • at our hospice buildings in Watford or St Albans
  • over the telephone
  • via virtual platforms such as Zoom, Teams or Whereby
  • Keeping simple records
  • Attending regular supervision
  • Following all RGP policies and procedures

💛 What’s in it for you?

Volunteering as a Listener offers many personal and practical benefits:

  • Make a real difference to people during some of life’s most challenging moments
  • Learn new skills in communication, empathy and supporting others
  • Receive full training and regular support from a named line manager
  • Become part of a warm, supportive hospice community
  • Build confidence in offering emotional support

Many volunteers tell us that this is a deeply rewarding and meaningful role.

🌟 Who we’re looking for

You don’t need clinical knowledge — just a caring and reliable approach. This role will suit you if you are:

  • A great listener and clear communicator
  • Empathetic, patient and non-judgemental
  • Able to maintain professional boundaries
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Reliable and able to manage your time independently
  • Confident using basic IT (email, forms, virtual calls)
  • Aged 18 or over

Getting there

About Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care

When serious illness strikes, we're here to help people in our community get the best out of every day. From the moment of diagnosis our specialist teams work with each individual to provide the compassionate care they need, in the place that's best for them. This is what we call: extraordinary care, anywhere.

We know that life-limiting illness doesn't just affect the individual, so we care for those around each patient, too – both during an illness and through bereavement.

It takes a whole community to provide this care to everybody who needs it. Our volunteers, supporters and champions in the community are the driving force behind everything we do.
