Do you enjoy supporting children and young people? We run groups for children affected by family illness or bereavement on Saturday mornings in Watford.
Our Children and Young People’s Team is looking for friendly, caring volunteers to help run our support groups for young people who are experiencing illness or bereavement in their family. These sessions offer a gentle, understanding space where young people can meet others going through something similar — and you can help make that possible.
👧🧒 What you’ll be doing
As a volunteer, you’ll support our counsellor to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere by:
- Building trusting relationships with children and young people
- Listening sensitively and offering reassurance
- Encouraging them to take part in group activities
- Helping set up refreshments and clear away afterwards
- Feeding back any highlights or concerns to the counsellor
Groups run once a month on Saturdays, depending on age group:
- Pre-teens: 2nd Saturday, 10:00–12:30
- Teens: Last Saturday, 14:00–16:30
- (We run groups in blocks of 4–6 weeks.)
💛 What’s in it for you?
Volunteering with us is an incredibly rewarding experience. You will:
- Make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people coping with illness or loss
- Build confidence and experience in youth support, mental health, bereavement work, or group facilitation
- Gain valuable skills for careers in education, social care, youth work, or counselling
- Join a warm, supportive team who truly value your contribution
- Receive training, ongoing support, and supervision
- Add purposeful, meaningful volunteering to your CV
- Feel the genuine reward of being someone young people can trust and talk to
🌈 Who we’re looking for
You don’t need specialist experience — just the right qualities. We’d love to hear from you if you:
- Have experience supporting children or young people (in any setting)
- Are a good listener with clear, compassionate communication skills
- Feel comfortable around topics of illness, grief, and loss
- Can work within clear boundaries as part of a supportive team
- Are over 18
🧭 What you need to know
- We’ll ask you to complete an application and a reference check
- A DBS check is required (we’ll support you with this)
- Mandatory training and role-specific training will be provided
- Reasonable expenses can be reimbursed
- We’re committed to equality, diversity, and creating an inclusive environment for all

About Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care
At Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, our unique care provides a lifeline of compassion and support to patients, carers, and families facing progressive life-limiting illness.
We provide palliative and end of life care support, including bereavement services, within Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire and our patient services are available to adults, as well as patients transitioning into adult services (16 to 25 years.) Bereavement support is offered for all ages to families of patients and those around them, as well as throughout the community, in schools and workplaces.
We are proud to offer care in the place that best suits the individual’s needs, whether that’s at home, in a care home, in a short stay in our inpatient unit, out in the community, or in our purpose-built Living Well Centre facilities. As a hospice care charity, we have offered this support, free of charge, for over 40 years.
