Summary
We are looking for a co-ordinator to support our coaches and readers.
Detailed description
Around 5,000 adults in Stevenage may not be able to read. Or write.
Not being able to read or write has a negative impact on a person’s ability to earn money, their social lives and helping their children to learn. If you are good with people, you could play a vital role as a Read Easy Coordinator in changing their lives.
Read Easy Stevenage and North Herts is a small group of volunteers providing free one-to-one reading coaching for adults in Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth. As a co-ordinator, you would be matching adults wanting to learn to read with the volunteer coaches who teach them. You provide continuing support with the help of our Literacy Specialist and the management team. The role is very flexible and the time required varies every week. The role provides lots of variety and can work well around other commitments.
We have one co-ordinator who says
“Being the Coordinator is the best of both worlds - I get to meet a variety of people who are all keen to develop and improve their reading and to work alongside enthusiastic coaches and management team. It's lovely to see the progress made during the coaching sessions. It’s a great team to be a part of.”

About Read Easy Stevenage & North Herts
Read Easy helps adults learn to read. We provide free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching in approved venues in Stevenage, Letchworth and Hitchin. Our readers and coaches meet twice a week for half an hour. We use a structured, phonics-based reading programme. The confidential one-to-one nature of our service is vital to encouraging people to come forward to ask for our help. Many adults are deeply embarrassed that they are unable to read. Many have bad memories of school and do not respond well to a classroom setting. By learning with one dedicated volunteer coach, a supportive and trusting bond develops, which helps motivate the reader to complete the course.
We are a small team of volunteers. We have regular meetings for reading coaches to learn from each other and every coach and reader is supported by a local coordinator. Our readers are all ages, the youngest 20, the oldest 67. You’re never too old to learn!
