Use your driving or practical DIY skills to move donations, support our sites and help keep our shops safe, welcoming and running smoothly.
Volunteer Driver and Maintenance Assistant
Role description
Enjoy driving or practical DIY? Put your skills to work helping a local animal charity.
We’re looking for a practical, friendly volunteer to help move donations and supplies between our sites and keep our charity shops and other premises in good order.
Your support will help our shops raise funds for animals and keep our spaces safe and welcoming. Whether you enjoy being out on the road, fixing things or a mixture of both, we’d love to hear from you.
About us
We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome stray, neglected and unwanted animals, and help local owners care for their pets. As a separately registered RSPCA branch, we raise most of our funds locally, with our charity shops providing vital support for our work.
Where and when
Location: Our shops and other Branch sites across North West London and South Hertfordshire.
Time commitment: We would welcome regular help, particularly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays between 9.30am and 2.30pm. Please tell us about your availability so we can discuss what might work.
Supported by: Our Retail Operations Manager.
This is an unpaid volunteer role.
What you could help with
Depending on your skills, interests and agreed activities, you could:
- Drive the Branch van to move donations, stock and supplies between sites.
- Collect and deliver donated items and small furniture, with guidance on what we can accept.
- Deliver animal supplies to foster carers.
- Help load and unload items safely, using suitable equipment and support.
- Carry out straightforward repairs and DIY, such as repairing shop fittings and helping with general upkeep.
- Help with electrical item safety testing following appropriate training.
- Complete basic vehicle checks and keep simple records of journeys, collections and deliveries.
- Help arrange appropriate waste disposal and provide access for visiting tradespeople.
Maintenance tasks will be agreed according to your experience and training. Work requiring specialist qualifications will be left to appropriately qualified contractors.
What we’re looking for
You don’t need animal welfare experience. We’re looking for someone who:
- Is reliable, practical and happy to work as part of a team.
- Is friendly and respectful when dealing with colleagues, donors and customers.
- Can work safely, follow guidance and ask for help when needed.
- Has driving experience, maintenance skills or both.
For driving activities, you will need a valid driving licence covering the Branch van and confidence driving a large van in busy areas. We will check your licence before you begin.
Some activities involve lifting and moving bulky items. We will discuss suitable tasks and any adjustments or support you may need.
What you’ll gain
- A practical way to support animal rescue and rehoming locally.
- The opportunity to use your existing skills and gain experience.
- Induction, relevant training and guidance from our team.
- The chance to meet people and become part of our Branch volunteer community.
Interested? Please get in touch.
Interested mainly in driving or mainly in maintenance? Please get in touch and tell us what you could offer.
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. If you need support or adjustments to apply or volunteer with us, please let us know.

About RSPCA NW London & S Hertfordshire
The RSPCA North West London & South Hertfordshire Branch CIO works to prevent cruelty to and suffering of animals. Every year we rescue and rehome hundreds of unwanted, stray and abandoned animals. In addition to this we assist many animals whose owners cannot afford the full costs of veterinary treatment that their animals require.
