Join the Open Door Charity team to support people experiencing homelessness by preparing and cooking meals for the twelve residents.
Night Shelter Volunteer Role
As a night shelter volunteer, you’ll work as part of a team of two, to prepare and serve evening meals for up to 12 residents staying at the shelter. Tasks include:
- Preparing, cooking, and serving simple but delicious meals such as sausages and mash, spaghetti bolognese, or chicken curry.
- Following a rotating monthly menu (ingredients and training are provided).
Volunteers must be able to work independently and have a clear understanding of safeguarding and boundaries. Due to the nature of our setting and vulnerability of our guests, we're unable to accept under 18's.
Shift Details:
- Volunteers typically arrive at 6:00 PM (earlier for new volunteers).
- Evening meals are served at 7:30 PM, and shifts usually finish by 8:00 PM.
- Volunteers work in pairs (where possible), with at least two staff members present in the building for support.
- Volunteers must be able to use their own initiative and have an awareness of safeguarding vulnerable adults.

Open Door needs your help to support people who are homeless and need help to rebuild their lives in the community. Open Door is only able to run smoothly because of the time and dedication of volunteers who help in many practical ways.
