Detailed description

Volunteer Opportunity:

Food Shopper for Open Door Night Shelter

Are you organised, reliable, and looking for a meaningful way to make a difference from home?

The role of Food Shopper is a vital part of keeping the Open Door Night Shelter running smoothly and ensuring our guests enjoy nutritious meals every day.

This is a home-based role, with regular communication and support from our friendly Food Team via WhatsApp. The role is carried out each Monday, with food orders placed online (we use Tesco) and delivered to the shelter on Wednesdays.

You’ll receive a basic shopping list each week and work from a menu, but there’s also scope to use your initiative and liaise with staff and volunteers to ensure we have the right quantities and ingredients for weekday lunches and evening meals.

The ordering process should take no more than an hour or so each Monday, making this a flexible but essential role for anyone who enjoys being organised and helping others behind the scenes.

If you're looking for a role where you can manage a small budget, make practical decisions, and see the direct impact of your efforts, this might be the perfect opportunity for you!

Your contribution will directly support people experiencing homelessness, helping to provide comforting, home-cooked meals that make Open Door such a welcoming place.

If you’d like to get involved and play a key role in our community effort, we’d love to hear from you!

About Open Door St Albans

Open Door work with other local charities and services to assist people at risk of homelessness. In 1993 we opened the St Albans night shelter, and led the development of the Open Door accommodation and Drop-In Centre in Bricket Road. We continue to make grants to improve the facilities. Open Door needs your help to support people who are homeless and need help to rebuild their lives in the community. Open Door is only able to run smoothly because of the time and dedication of volunteers who help in many practical ways.
