Summary

Are you a great organiser? Do you have the ability to work alone or part of a small team?

Detailed description

At Open Door we have over 100 volunteers working between the night shelter and the Winter Beds Project. We are looking for a small team to help organise and co-ordinate the food donations that come into us at Open Door.

The role would suit someone with a few hours to spare each week, particularly friends or couples/partners. This role would suit two people and would involve working in our cellar which is where we store all our dried food donations.

We are looking for volunteers who can take their own direction and work independently.

This role is on Monday morning (weekly) and should take no more than 2 hours.

Volunteers would be responsible for rotating food stock, ensuring that shortest date produce is at the front of the shelves and works back to the longest date. Restocking the shelves with new food donations that come in each fortnight and communicating with our food shoppers and food bank when particular items are running low. The role also involves 'topping up' the pantry with any items that need replenishing and replenishing toilietries in the shower facilities. This role is key to the smooth running of the night shelter and although it is not a face to face volunteer position with our guests, it is as equally important.

About Open Door St Albans

Open Door work with other local charities and services to assist people at risk of homelessness. In 1993 we opened the St Albans night shelter, and led the development of the Open Door accommodation and Drop-In Centre in Bricket Road. We continue to make grants to improve the facilities. Open Door needs your help to support people who are homeless and need help to rebuild their lives in the community. Open Door is only able to run smoothly because of the time and dedication of volunteers who help in many practical ways.
