Summary

The Volunteer Chaplain provides pastoral, spiritual and emotional support to people connected with One YMCA, including colleagues and beneficiaries.

Detailed description

Rooted in the Christian ethos of the YMCA, the Chaplaincy team serves people of all faiths and none, offering a listening ear, encouragement, and signposting to further support to enable them to reach their potential in Mind, Body and Spirit.


Please note, this role is flexible across all of our services, particularly our hostel sites in:

Hatfield

Watford

High Wycombe

Borehamwood

Bishop's Stortford

Stevenage

Hitchin


Main Tasks/ Responsibilities/ Activities

·       Offer a welcoming, non-judgmental presence within One YMCA services.

·       Provide spiritual care, pastoral support, and encouragement to individuals, respecting their beliefs and values.

·       Lead or support optional activities such as reflection groups, prayer gatherings, or seasonal activities (e.g. Christmas, Easter).

·       Visit different service areas (e.g. housing projects, family support services) to be available for conversation and support.

·       Work alongside staff teams to promote wellbeing and contribute to a supportive, inclusive environment.

·       Signpost individuals to other sources of help (practical, emotional, or spiritual) when needed.

·       Participate in team meetings, reflective practice, and supervision with the Chaplain Team Leader (or designated coordinator).


Skills / Abilities / Experience / Qualities

·       A practising Christian, with a mature faith and commitment to the mission and values of One YMCA.

·       Excellent listening and communication skills.

·       Compassionate, patient, and approachable, able to relate to people from all walks of life.

·       Respectful of diversity and committed to supporting people of all faiths and none.

·       Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality whilst maintaining a non-judgmental approach.

·       Willingness to work as part of a team and under supervision (lone working may also be required).


Training / Support

·      A full induction to site and service will be provided

·      Requirement to complete online e-learning including Safeguarding and Health & Safety

·      A menu of optional training will be provided

·      Ongoing support and regular 1 to 1s

·      Opportunities to attend volunteer meetings, conferences and events across the organisation


Additional Information

·      You will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check

·      Two references will be required
