We are seeking a creative and user focused UX/UI Designer to lead the design of our web and mobile experiences.

Job Title: Volunteer UX/UI Designer (Web & App)

BackCare is the UK’s national charity dedicated to improving spinal health and supporting everyone affected by back pain. Back pain is one of the world’s leading causes of disability. Around half of all adults experience it in any given month, and it is estimated that 80% of people will be affected during their lifetime.

In the UK alone, back pain accounts for over 12 million lost working days each year, alongside significant pain, reduced mobility, and emotional strain. Its impact reaches into every part of daily life — work, family, independence, and overall wellbeing.

BackCare exists to change that. Through education, research, and advocacy, the charity works to reduce the burden of back pain and help people live healthier, more comfortable lives.

You could be part of that change – as a volunteer helping us by using your UX/UI skills to maximise the usability of our new App and Web based offerings by creating an intuitive and accessible experience for a wide audience which includes both those directly living with low back pain (LBP) and healthcare professionals alike. One of the publications you will be working on is our Handling of People – used in both emergency and non-emergency healthcare settings.

About the Role

We are seeking a creative and user‑focused UX/UI Designer to lead the design of our web and mobile experiences. You will shape how users interact with our digital products by producing intuitive layouts, engaging visuals, and seamless user journeys.

You could be at the beginning of your career, or retired.

For anyone starting out we can offer

    • An opportunity to shape the look and feel of key digital products for your portfolio
    • Experience working with a supportive IT team to bring your designs to life
    • Creative autonomy within a collaborative environment
    • Professional development and training opportunities

For those at the height of their career or retired we can simply offer

  • An opportunity to give back and help to produce tools that will go on to assist those living with low back pain (LBP) on a global scale (all of our work will be translated into different languages, where appropriate)

You will work closely with our CEO and pro bono IT/development team, who will translate your designs into fully functioning applications. Your focus is on concept, experience, and design quality — not coding.

Key Responsibilities

    • UI design including typography, colour, layout, and component styling
    • Creating and maintaining a design system for consistent brand experience
    • Preparing clear design specifications for the IT team to implement
    • Collaborating with developers to ensure accurate translation of designs
    • Ensuring all designs meet accessibility standards (WCAG)
    • Conducting usability testing and iterating based on feedback

Role

You will lead the visual and interaction design of our web and mobile experiences focused on:

  • User research – to understand user needs ( you will be provided with both patients and healthcare professionals to assist with this area)
  • Wireframing and user‑flow creation for web and mobile journeys to create polished interface designs
  • Prototyping interactive screens to demonstrate functionality and flow, interactions, and screen transitions.
    • UI design including typography, colour, layout, and component styling
    • Creating and maintaining a design system for consistent brand experience
    • Preparing clear design specifications for the IT team to implement
    • Collaborating with developers to ensure accurate translation of designs
    • Ensuring all designs meetaccessibility standards (WCAG)

  • Validating usability  through structured testing and iterate based on findings.
  • Design — maintain a consistent design language and reusable component library.
  • Accessibility Standards — Ensure all designs meet WCAG accessibility requirements.
  • Project Documentation — Provide clear design specifications, assets, and rationale for development teams.

Required Skills & Experience

    • UX Principles and human‑centred design methodology
    • UI Tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch
    • Responsive Design for mobile, tablet, and desktop
    • Information Architecture and user‑flow mapping
    • Ability to communicate design decisions clearly to non‑design stakeholders
    • Experience working in cross‑functional teams (design + IT/development)
    • Strong portfolio demonstrating web and/or app design projects

Desirable Skills

    • Basic HTML/CSS understanding to support smoother handover
    • Experience with design systems or component‑based design
    • Familiarity with agile workflows
    • Knowledge of analytics tools to inform design decisions

What Success Looks Like

    • Intuitive, visually consistent user experiences
    • Designs that translate cleanly into development
    • User satisfaction
    • Accessible, inclusive interfaces that meet modern standards

Skills & Experience

    • Strong portfolio demonstrating web and/or app design projects
    • Proficiency in UI design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch
    • Understanding of UX principles and human‑centred design
    • Experience designing for responsive and mobile‑first layouts
    • Ability to communicate design decisions clearly to technical and non‑technical teams
    • Experience collaborating with developers or IT teams

Desirable

    • Basic understanding of HTML/CSS to support smoother handover
    • Experience with agile workflows

Ideal Candidate

You are a visual thinker who enjoys solving problems through design. You are confident turning ideas into polished user experiences and thrive when collaborating with developers to bring concepts into reality. Whilst we would like someone to work on this project from our office in Hitchin we also appreciate that it could be a largely remote project.
