Letchworth Educational Settlement provides adult education and is a community hub. We seek a new Secretary who will also be a Trustee of the Charity.

Meet, Learn, Create!

The Settlement is a well respected, 100 year old organisation based in the world’s first Garden City.  It operates from a unique Grade II listed building, the old Skittles Inn, built in 1907, which has been a centre for adult education since 1920.

We are a registered charity, providing a wide range of courses, workshops and events to the local community.  We are looking for a new Secretary to build on the achievements of our current one.   Over the last few years we have increased the number of courses offered, developed our Easter and Summer workshops. We have also invested in our facilities and IT, and in 2024 implemented a new database and website.

Our new Secretary should have a passion for and commitment to adult education, community development and the arts, with the energy, vision and skills to help us to continue to develop our offer and the use of our facilities.

The main responsibilities are to arrange meetings of the committee, managing the agenda and taking minutes.  To advise the committee on its constitution and governance and handle related tasks. To undertake the duties required to maintain the Settlement’s charitable registration.  To supervise the management of the Settlement’s records.

This role would suit a well organised person, who likes detail and can multitask.  The secretary will be able to relate to a wide range of people including other trustees, leaners, hirers and office staff.  He/she will also contribute to the strategic direction of the organisation.

The Secretary is an officer of the Settlement and a member of the Board of Trustees that oversees the work of the Settlement, which is managed on a day-to-day basis by the Manager and his staff.

You can find out more about the Settlement on our website.  The chair, Elaine Fox, can provide further information about this role.
