Summary
Longstanding youth gardening project is looking to make more of its cut flower garden and increase/widen its use. Would suit an individual or a pair sharing.Detailed description
Hitchin Youth Allotment set up a cut flower garden a year or so ago but realise it has great potential and we want to make much more of it. The role has four main elements:
- to plan and decide what plants to grow to make it a great cut flower garden
- take the lead in its maintenance
- increase and widen its use reaching out to youth groups, other community groups, flower arranging groups, places of worship etc to engage as widely as possible and so spread interest in cut flowers and flower arranging
- maximise synergies between this element and the wider youth project.
This is a purely voluntary role and can be what you make of it. You would report to the overall project leader. We have high ambitions but it can be done gradually. We would like to begin the process this spring. Our existing project volunteers will help with the maintenance but it would be good to also attract new, extra volunteers with an interest in cut flowers.
We have some ideas already but are keen to hear yours.
It would be lovely to see the flowers grown being put to good and extensive use and we can explore how that is done.
You may be part of a flower arranging group, or do the flowers at one of the many places of worship in the area. Or you might just be an enthusiast. We do need someone will a bit of experience and expertise as running or helping to run sessions is likely to be part of the role, for example for Brownies and Guide groups, WI, possibly a mix of free and paid for sessions. But we are not looking for a professional, the whole ethos of Hitchin Youth Allotment is about volunteers and creating a relaxed and mindful space. We strongly believe everything we do should include a bit of fun.
We are very happy to answer any questions or show you around, so if you are interested please do get in touch with Paul Dee.
This should be a really rewarding role for someone, or a pair of friends perhaps, who are easy to get along with. And, of course, there are likely to be free flowers!!
