Hitchin almshouse charity wishes to appoint a number of new trustees.

Hitchin United Charities is a Hitchin-based almshouse charity providing 25 almshouse units in the town, including the Grade II* Biggin, Warner’s almshouses by St Mary’s churchyard, and Skynners’ almshouses on Bancroft. In addition to the almshouses, the charity has other purposes including the promotion of apprenticeships.

The charity has entered an important period. The trustees have started a major renovation project at the Biggin and are considering the future of the charity’s almshouse accommodation more generally. They are looking to appoint a number of new trustees.

The charity is open to any perspective, but would particularly value experience in:

  • buildings: architecture, construction or property;
  • money: accountancy or finance; and
  • law

These skills are sought to complement the range of experience already represented on the board. Trustees are however appointed for their judgement and commitment to the charity’s purposes, not as professional advisers.

An interest in Hitchin, heritage property, housing for those in real need, or local charitable work would be helpful. Previous trustee experience is not at all essential.

Trustees have responsibilities to the past, present and future. They are responsible for the governance and direction of the charity, including stewardship of its assets for the effective support of current beneficiaries and future generations, with regard to the regulatory environment, governing scheme and donors’ intentions.

This is a voluntary role. Board meetings are held roughly quarterly, with some additional time required for reading papers, site visits and occasional committee work.

The charity is currently in the process of incorporation, which will limit the liability of its trustees.
