Volunteer with Hertfordshire Wing RAF Air Cadets. Mentor young people, gain leadership skills and qualifications, and make a real difference locally.

About Cadet Forces Adult Volunteers (CFAVs)

Hertfordshire Wing RAF Air Cadets relies on adult volunteers to deliver a first-class cadet experience to over a dozen squadrons across the county. CFAVs come from all walks of life and backgrounds, no prior RAF or military experience is required. What matters is a willingness to give time, support young people and contribute to their local community.

What CFAVs do

Volunteers support squadrons in a huge range of roles, including:

  • Instructing cadets in subjects like drill, first aid, fieldcraft and aviation studies
  • Supervising and delivering adventure training, sport and shooting activities
  • Organising and running social media, communications and marketing for squadrons or Wing
  • Managing administration, welfare, safeguarding and health and safety
  • Leading squadrons as Officer Commanding or supporting as Civilian Instructors
  • Supporting STEM, music, and flying and gliding opportunities

Why volunteer

CFAVs gain access to free training and nationally recognised qualifications, including leadership and management courses, safeguarding training and first aid certification. Many volunteers say the role gives them a genuine sense of purpose, community and the chance to make a lasting difference to young people's lives, all while developing transferable skills useful in their civilian careers.

Time commitment and flexibility

Roles are flexible and can fit around work and family life. Some CFAVs volunteer one evening a week at their local squadron, others take on Wing-level roles or support weekend and residential activities such as camps and Wing Field Day.

How to get involved

Anyone aged 20 or over interested in becoming a CFAV can contact their local squadron or Hertfordshire Wing directly to find out more about current opportunities and the application and vetting process.
