Summary
Our Health Matters is a local project which is part of the nationwide Core20PLUS5 scheme.Detailed description
The Our Health Matters project focuses on the Borehamwood areas of Cowley Hill and Brookmeadow because research has shown us that communities in these areas are not well-supported by existing health services. They often experience health inequalities, especially with early cancer diagnosis, severe mental illness, chronic respiratory disease, and hypertension. We are hoping to recruit volunteer Community Connectors to be the ‘voice’ of these communities, engaging with local people to understand the barriers they face in accessing health services, obtaining the right standard of treatment, and receiving optimal outcomes.
A Community Connector is a volunteer who is open-minded, kind, engaging and interested in tackling health inequality in Borehamwood.
We are looking for individuals or carers who have lived experience of one or more of four long-term health conditions, Severe Mental Illness, Chronic Respiratory Disease, Cancer, and Hypertension. With a particular focus on our ethnic minority communities, we need volunteers who would be willing to share their experiences.
You will receive training to equip you with knowledge, skills, and tools needed to fulfil your role successfully. As a Connector, you will be an important voice in your community. You will work closely with:
· Local Residents
· Local Community Organisations
· Social Prescribing link workers – to support, signpost, and empower residents
· Service providers – to develop greater cultural awareness and competence
· Our Health Matters Project Coordinator
