Detailed description
What You’ll Be Doing
Preparing and Organising Donations
You will help process donated items as they arrive at the Comfort Cases UK hub. This includes unwrapping, sorting, and preparing items such as pyjamas, blankets, rucksacks, journals, sketchbooks, and colouring pencils. You’ll ensure items are clean, presentable, and ready to be packed, attaching ribbons and labels to pyjamas and blankets where needed. You’ll also help neatly organise and stack supplies so they are easy to access during packing sessions.
Assembling Care Kits
You’ll create small but meaningful kits that form part of each Comfort Case. This includes putting together pen and pencil sets (two pens and two pencils per set) into zip-lock bags or pencil cases, as well as assembling toiletry packs containing essentials such as shampoo, shower gel, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, deodorant, and sanitary products. Attention to detail is important here, as these items help children feel clean, cared for, and thought about.
Stock Management and Organisation
You’ll support the upkeep of the Comfort Cases resource library by restocking items, keeping shelves tidy, and helping maintain a well-organised storage space. From time to time, you may also assist with small reorganisation projects to improve efficiency and make the space easier for volunteers and staff to use.
Packing Comfort Cases
You’ll help pack rucksacks with carefully selected items, ensuring each Comfort Case is complete and thoughtfully assembled. Once packed, you’ll assist with preparing cases for dispatch, including boxing them securely and helping organise courier collections so they reach children quickly and safely.
Administrative and Support Tasks
Occasionally, you may assist with follow-up phone calls to local authorities to gather feedback on Comfort Cases that have already been delivered. This helps the charity understand impact and continually improve the support offered to children entering care.
Time Commitment
Volunteers typically give 2–4 hours per week, with flexibility depending on availability and charity needs.
The Impact You’ll Make
Every Comfort Case you help prepare represents a child entering care who will receive their belongings in a rucksack rather than a bin bag, and who will feel a sense of dignity, comfort, and belonging during a difficult transition. Your time and care truly make a differenc
