Abbots Friends are looking for people to join a team of volunteers offering social connection and companionship to isolated and lonely people.

Make a real difference in someone’s day – even for just an hour a month.

Abbots Friends is the sister service to Abbots Care, an award-winning homecare provider based in Hertfordshire with a CQC rating of Outstanding. At Abbots Care, we pride ourselves on enhancing the lives of the individuals we support through a person-centred approach that promotes dignity, respect, and personalised care in a supportive and enriching environment.

Abbots Friends is a free, not-for-profit service dedicated to reducing loneliness and social isolation among vulnerable people living in their own homes. While our care teams provide essential daily support, many clients miss out on regular social interaction — and that’s where you come in.

The Role

As an Abbots Friends Volunteer, you’ll provide companionship and build meaningful connections with clients, helping them stay connected to the world around them. Your time, conversation, and presence can greatly improve someone’s wellbeing, confidence, and quality of life.

What You’ll Do

Activities will depend on each client’s interests, but may include:

  • Having a friendly chat (in person, by phone, or video call)
  • Sharing a cup of tea and offering companionship
  • Playing board games, cards, or reading together
  • Supporting hobbies such as gardening or light housekeeping
  • Helping with simple activities or social events (e.g. bingo, storytelling)
  • Listening to life stories and encouraging conversation
  • Supporting individuals whose first language isn’t English

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Friendly, kind, and enthusiastic
  • Good communicators with a genuine interest in people
  • Reliable and able to commit to at least 1 hour per month
  • Empathetic, understanding, and approachable
  • Able to build and maintain meaningful relationships

Why Join Abbots Friends?

There are so many reasons to join our team, but these are our top ones:

  • A rewarding experience – There’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve made a difference to someone’s day, week, or even month.
  • Flexibility – We understand the importance of work-life balance and offer flexible volunteering opportunities.
  • Variety – No two days are the same, making this a truly unique and fulfilling role.
  • Learning & development – Access to training and opportunities to gain knowledge in health and social care.
  • Supportive environment – Join a welcoming, values-driven organisation with a fantastic team around you.
  • Be part of a family – When you join Abbots Care and Abbots Friends, you become part of a supportive community that values its people and provides ongoing encouragement and development.

Why It Matters

Loneliness is a growing issue, and your time can be truly life changing. A simple conversation, shared activity, or friendly face can bring joy, improve wellbeing, and help someone feel valued and connected.
