We are 6th Hitchin Beaver Colony; a lively, warm and welcoming group of 14 children aged 6–8, based at The Priory School in Hitchin.
We are 6th Hitchin Beaver Colony; a lively, warm and welcoming group of 14 children aged 6–8, based at The Priory School in Hitchin. Every Tuesday evening our Beavers explore, create, laugh, sing, build, get muddy and discover what they're capable of away from screens and into the world.
We are part of 6th Hitchin Scouts, a wider group of volunteers who share a passion for giving young people experiences that stay with them for life. We are a friendly, supportive team and nobody here is expected to do it alone.
We are looking for a volunteer Beaver Scout Leader to join our team and help us deliver our weekly sessions and occasional outdoor adventures.
This is a completely voluntary role and one of the most rewarding things you can do with your time. You will be helping to shape the early experiences of children at a really important age; building their confidence, curiosity and sense of adventure, one Tuesday at a time.
What you'll be doing:
- Helping to plan and deliver fun, engaging weekly sessions for children aged 6–8
- Supporting Beavers to work toward their badges and awards
- Joining occasional camps, outdoor activities and community events
- Being part of a small, close-knit leadership team
No experience in Scouting is necessary; what matters most is the person, not the CV.
What we are looking for:
You might be a great fit if you:
- Love working with children and want to make a real difference to their early years
- Are passionate about helping young people experience the world; outdoors, indoors, creatively and beyond
- Are reliable, enthusiastic and enjoy being part of a team
- Are aged 18 or over
We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, ages and walks of life. Whether you're a recent graduate, a working professional, a retiree or anything in between, if you care about children and community, we want to hear from you.
Commitment & Flexibility
We meet every Tuesday evening and ask that you come along as regularly as you can, but we understand that life happens. If you need to miss a session occasionally, that is absolutely fine. We are a team and we support one another.
In addition to Tuesday evenings, there are occasional weekend events, camps and community days throughout the year, these are always planned well in advance so you can fit them around your life.
Training & Support
Full training is provided, you do not need to know anything about Scouting to get started. You will complete a straightforward online induction and a first aid course, both of which are fully supported. From there, additional training and development opportunities are available if you'd like them, but there is no pressure.
You will also become part of the wider Scouts volunteer network and the Hitchin District Volunteer Team, a community of thousands of people across the UK who are all here to support one another.
Why Volunteer With Us?
- Full training and ongoing support provided, no experience necessary
- Flexible commitment, we work around you
- Be part of a close, supportive and friendly team
- Join a nationwide network of Scout volunteers
- Gain skills in leadership, communication and working with young people
- Most importantly, have a lot of fun and make a real difference
