We are looking for a Deputy Team Leader to join our small volunteer management team so that we can can continue to grow and help more adults to learn to read!Detailed description
Read Easy Stevenage and North Herts launched in May 2022. We are affiliated to the national charity, Read Easy UK. We are currently helping 14 adults in Stevenage, Letchworth and Hitchin to learn how to read by providing free, one-to-one, coaching provided by volunteers. All our reading coaches are fully trained by Read Easy and have Enhanced DBS checks.
We would like to help more adults who need reading support. We’re passionate about transforming more lives in the community.
Becoming a Management Team volunteer for Read Easy is fun and fulfilling but requires commitment and passion. You’ll be given lots of support, meet a diverse range of people, and be part of a genuinely life-changing organisation. From experience, we know that learning to read really does change lives and being part of that process is very rewarding.
You could make a real difference to people in your community. Once appointed, the Deputy Team Leader would support the Team Leader in running management team meetings, coach meetings and be involved in decision making with our small team of six who currently support 14 volunteer coaches helping adults learn to read.
The skills we require are:
● Strong leadership, team management skills and experience, with the ability to motivate and inspire trust and confidence in others.
● Strategic thinking to set goals, plan work and delegate.
● A willingness and ability to challenge others, deal with underperformance and manage conflict when necessary.
● Confidence in using IT.
● The ability to use initiative and work independently.
● Good communication skills and willingness to offer support to the Team.
● A non-judgemental attitude and respect for others, with a commitment to equality and diversity, to make everyone feel valued and included.
● Energy and enthusiasm with an average of four to five hours a week to commit to the role.

Our readers and coaches meet twice a week and work for just half an hour at a time through a structured, phonics-based reading programme. Normally, they meet at approved local venues, but since the pandemic, many have moved to working remotely. The confidential one-to-one nature of our service is vital to encouraging people to come forward to ask for our help. Many adults are deeply embarrassed and ashamed by the fact that they are unable to read and, with bad memories of school, would fear a return to a classroom setting, where old feelings of failure could be reawakened. By working instead with one dedicated volunteer coach, a supportive and trusting bond develops between the pair, which helps motivate the reader to complete the course.
Read Easy UK, which is based in Gloucestershire, is registered as a CIO with the Charity Commission. We are the umbrella body which supports volunteers to set up Read Easy groups in their communities.
