Summary

Schoolreaders needs volunteers across Hertfordshire to provide one-to-one reading sessions to children in local primary schools.

Detailed description

Schoolreaders need volunteers to go into local primary schools in a range of areas across Hertfordshire during the school day to listen to the children read to them 1:1. The volunteer needs to be able to commit to once a week during term time for one hour or more.

Our volunteers get enormous pleasure from seeing the difference that a few hours of their time can make to a child's reading ability, confidence and enjoyment.

If you have some time to spare, a good grasp of written English and if you enjoy spending time with children, you could become a Schoolreader. Our volunteers are drawn from all walks of life, and range in age from 18+.

We do not ask for any particular qualifications, but Schoolreaders need to enjoy spending time with children, have a good grasp of written and spoken English and be able to commit to attend school weekly during term time for a minimum of 1 year.

Schoolreaders is a free service for primary schools and all our volunteers give their time freely. We regret we cannot reimburse expenses so try to match volunteers with schools as local as possible.

Each potential volunteer completes an application form online or by post and agrees to the Schoolreaders code of conduct. The partner school who the volunteer is paired with completes an enhanced DBS check at the school's expense. The school provide guidance and training specific to their school and your activities.

Each school uses our volunteers differently, so some volunteers see the same few children each week, while others get to spend time with every member of the class over a term.

About Schoolreaders

Schoolreaders is a charity that finds volunteers and matches them to primary schools where they give free one-to-one reading sessions. Our aim is to make sure that every child can read well by the time they move to secondary school at the age of 11.

Our volunteers currently listen to 12,500 children read every week across England. If you have some spare time during the school day, a good grasp of English, are able to commit to a school for at least one year and if you enjoy spending time with children, you could become a Schoolreaders volunteer. We do not ask for any particular educational qualifications. Our volunteers are drawn from all walks of life, and range in age from 18 to 92. Our volunteers get enormous pleasure from seeing the difference that a few hours of their time can make to a child's reading ability, confidence and enjoyment.

By the end of the 2021/22 academic year, we aim to provide 20,000 children with a face-to-face reading session every week, focusing on schools in areas of greatest need where more children are disadvantaged due to economic or social circumstances.
